Coraline comes to Blu-ray with a 1080p VC-1 video presentation that is sure to both please and impress. The transfer is absolute perfection, and a sharp detail filled experience. The amount of detail put into everything shines through with the Blu-ray release, and it’s the only way this film should be viewed. There are two versions of the film included, a 2D and 3D version.

I viewed the 3D version first, which was a disappointment to say the least. Yes it worked quite nice a few times in the film, but was usually more distracting and annoying than anything. The 2D version though is one not to be missed. Colors were fantastic, and the film had a nice amount of pop. As stated earlier, it’s filled with so much detail, and one that I could find nothing wrong with. 10/10.

A 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track is included on the Blu-ray release and absolutely dazzles. Like the film, the track starts out fairly quiet and lacking in surround use, but definitely picks up as the film picks up. The surround sound opened during the more intense scenes, including a thunderstorm towards the beginning, sounding clear as can be.

Dialogue was always easy to understand, and the film’s music was extremely beautiful as it shined through the front left and right speakers, occasionally the surround speakers as well. The film’s sound effects were very dynamic and placed properly in the mix. 10/10.

Deleted Scenes (8:38) (HD)
Henry Selick introduces the deleted scenes as a whole, as well as specifically before the scene. The deleted scenes are actually fairly cool, from both a story and technical aspect.

The Making Of Coraline (35:54) (HD)
An in-depth look behind-the-scenes of Coraline. It covers the voice acting, to the character sketches, to actual models, building sets, and how they filmed certain scenes.

Voicing The Characters (10:46) (HD)
The cast behind the voices, including Dakota Fanning and Teri Hatcher discuss working on the film.

Creepy Coraline (5:02) (HD)
A feature all about the creepy things in the film. Animator Juliana Cox shows off the rats used in the film, the cast and crew discuss the evil mother, as well as the bugs and slugs.

There are three picture-in-picture options available, one is a standard PiP track which features more behind-the-scenes footage. A PiP animatic track allows viewers to view the sketch versions of the scenes while you view the film. Coraline is a fascinating and beautiful film, one that both adults and children can enjoy. The film definitely had more than a few creepy moments, but it’s what really gave it the charm that it does. The characters are all very funny, and everyone will find themselves amazed by the world that Coraline experiences.

The Blu-ray release is perfection, with amazing video and audio, and very nice and informative supplements. The Blu-ray is a ‘Must Own‘ for any fan of the film, and ‘Highly Recommended‘ for everyone else.
